The Art Of Starting A Blog And Immediately Abandoning It

Well...it happens to the best of us.I had a consistent, albeit short, run there for the first three weeks of The Blog. But then life came at me fast, as I’ve heard it does for many people. I know I threatened to wax poetic about “responsible upcycling” in my last post, but I’m finding that topic a bit stifling...it’s hard to put into words in a way that’s coherent and interesting.

So, in an effort to just put pen to paper, let me fill you in on what I’ve been up to since posting last:

I ran my weekly sewing class at The North River Arts Society, which wrapped up this past Tuesday. I was lucky to teach another great group of students who were such fast learners that I was kind of just milling around during the final class, entertaining myself with one of those gummy erasers. Everyone was so heads down, sewing machines smoking, in the zone, it was awesome. Notable finished pieces included a pair of pants (with ruffles!), a flowy summer dress (with pockets!!), an orange vest-and-shorts set (with contrast stitching!!!), and tons of hair bows (made with a PINK sewing machine!!!!).

Craft Night, hosted by Nina Cherie Cahill (also at NRAS), began last month, too. So far, it’s been really wonderful getting together with fellow creatives once a week to bounce ideas off of and motivate each other, swap stories, talk politics, and then get too angry to continue to talk politics, and gossip about people who aren’t there. You should drop in every now and again to make sure we’re not talking about you and that really embarrassing thing you did that one time. Mhm...we all remember!

My college friends and I agreed earlier this summer that we needed some sort of structured thing to get us writing again — something with deadlines and people who would hold us accountable. So, we met Via Zoom (™ 2020) for our inaugural writer’s group meeting in mid-September. This is probably the main reason why The Blog flatlined — my brain worm and I were busy writing creatively elsewhere. I’ve been having a blast working on an old screenplay I went back and gutted, and I don’t want to jinx anything but...Stella may have gotten her groove back, people! My friends are so extremely talented, thoughtful, and funny, and it was so exciting getting to read their writing for the first time in a while.

I also started taking ballet classes again after summer break. Yeah, BALLET! No, we do not wear leotards and tights, nor will there be a recital!!!!!!

It’s fun when things get moving and shaking again after summer ends, but that also means that some projects (*cough cough* the blog *cough cough*) get pushed to the back burner. I’m glad I created this space to further flesh out thoughts and ideas outside of an Instagram caption, but, as if it wasn’t already obvious, I’m in no way going to stick to a consistent schedule (I knew from jump that an abandonment of some sort was inevitable).

But also like...so what? It’s a personal blog — I’m not the freaking New York Times. All I can do is write when my brain worm compels me to do so. I can’t force him to do anything he doesn’t wanna.

And right now, he’s reminding me that I have to get ready for ballet class, so I must jeté. In my next post, I may try to tackle my “responsible upcycling” idea, or I might share a few tips on how not to be an a**hole when shopping at the thrift store (I’ve been keeping notes, honey). Until next time…whenever that may be…
